FIGHTING XENOPHOBIA AND ADDRESSING ANTI-ASIAN RACISM

Anti-Asian discrimination and hate crimes root back to our early history, and in the latest news there's been an uptick in Anti-Asian hate crimes, particularly targeting elderly Asian Americans. It is important to fight against this incessant racism, and be vocal about the lives that are currently at risk.

VIETNAMESE IMMIGRATION IN THE UNITED STATES
When Vietnamese boat arrivals escalated dramatically in 1979, with more than 54,000 arrivals in June alone, boat 'pushbacks' became routine and thousands of Vietnamese may have perished at sea as a result.

VIETNAMESE REFUGEE CHILDREN IN THE UNITED STATES
There were virtually no Vietnamese students in American elementary or secondary schools before 1975. Growing up in America has been difficult for the children of refugees. As a group, they were uprooted from their homeland under frequently violent and traumatic circumstances.

VIETNAMESE IMMIGRATION IN THE UNITED STATES
The Vietnamese immigrant population has grown significantly since 1975, roughly doubling every decade between 1980 and 2000, and then increasing 26 percent in the 2000s. In 2017, more than 1.3 million Vietnamese resided in the United States, accounting for 3 percent of the nation’s 44.5 million.
