Vietnamese Boat People will be in Oklahoma City! Join us and our nonprofit partner Possibilities Inc on Saturday, November 18th, for a free community event. ​Presented by The Manhattan Theatre Club - Poor Yella Rednecks is written by playwright and screenwriter Qui Nguyen, following a Vietnamese family's attempts to put down roots in Arkansas, a place as different from home as it gets. This play is the sequel to the critically-acclaimed Vietgone, with its comic book and action movie influences that melds a deeply personal story with the playwright’s trademark, killer humor. This is a FREE community-driven digital platform to showcase family stories. Everyone has a story to share. And we are inviting you and your family to share yours! The Accidental Getaway Driver

VBP is a proud Community Partner of the 46th Asian American International Film Festival 

​

Join us for the NY premiere of this film. Taking inspiration from a true story, the film is set in OC, California and centers on an elderly Vietnamese American man during a routine pickup who is taken hostage at gunpoint by three men who escaped prison. The film explores themes/topics on system-impacted people and incarceration, Asian masculinity, intergenerational trauma and loneliness.

After the beginning of the end of the French Empire, hundreds of Vietnamese women and their children migrated to West Africa with Senegalese husbands, some voluntarily but others against their will. This powerful film captures interviews conducted in 2018 with the Senegalese-Vietnamese communities in Dakar and Malika Senegal.

The Vietnamese American Community of South New Jersey invites all to a gathering to honor our Việt history and heritage.

April 30 is annually known in our community as Black April, and is a day to reflect upon the fall of Saigon and of South Vietnam.

Dust Child Moderated Talk

Asian American Writers’ Workshop presents a celebration of best-selling author Nguyá»…n Phan Quế Mai’s latest novel, DUST CHILD, a convergence of lineage and memory borne from decisions made in time of war. Chanel Miller says, “In DUST CHILD, rupture leads to emotional richness and pain creates the pathways worth walking.” Quế Mai will be joined in conversation by Vanessa Chan.

This event is in partnership with Vietnamese Boat People Podcast and Yu and Me Books and hosted by the incredible New Design High School.

NWVSA Leadership Summit

"A Picture is Worth A Thousand Words" 

 

Ever wanted to explore your own family’s history and stories but never knew where to begin? We will explore storytelling methods such as journal and essay writing, conversation cards and family photo collages. This workshop will focus on critical elements, like journaling as a way to begin writing your story, using photos to spark a memory and how to build on that to create your own story canvas about your family's history. In this interactive workshop Tracey and Alison share with participants techniques on using photos to generate ideas for short essays and stories.

Come preserve your family's story and legacy! Whether you want your story to be part of the next season of the VBP podcast (future Season 7: “Then & Now") or you just want to contribute your story to the VBP global collective, this is an opportunity to share your story. You'll receive a copy of your recording to keep for your family for generations to come!

 

There is no cost to record but space is limited, so you must RSVP in advance.

Season 6: Live Interview with Lisa Phu

Join us in a virtual event to Kick-Off season 6 of the podcast!

Join VBP host Tracey Nguyen Mang for an up-close and personal interview with Alaska-based journalist Lisa Phu, creator of Before Me, a limited series chronicling her mother’s journey from Cambodia to Vietnam to America over the course of decades.

​

In November 2022, Lisa Phu and Self Evident podcast, launched a limited series Before Me. The story unfolds between Lisa and her mother Lan as the two care for Lisa's first born daughter — and for the first time, Lan feels ready to share her own experiences fully with Lisa, on tape.

Lunar New Year Celebration

Kick off the 2023 Lunar New Year with a day of festivities at the Montclair Art Museum.

Hosted by AAPI Montclair, co-presented with Vietnamese Boat People and other local organizations. 

 

Lunar New Year is a time of hope where family, friends, and neighbors come together to rejoice in new beginnings as we look ahead to a peaceful and prosperous year. Cheer on lion dancers and enjoy live performances from local artists and students from our local schools. March in the dragon parade or try your hand at one of our family friendly crafts. Sample a variety of scrumptious eats and browse specialty merchandise from local vendors. Your ticket also gives you full access to the beautiful galleries inside the Montclair Art Museum.
