Introducing Myself As You

As Told By: Cindy Truong

Introducing Myself As You is a story about how the lives of a mother and daughter are intertwined. There is a special power dynamic that lies between an immigrant and their child, one that reverts the traditional standard of the child completely relying on the parent, and instead places the child as the interpreter, entry point, and authority figure to the parent. This story is a both a letter and confession, of the daughter traversing the history before her and desperately trying to bridge the gap to her mother.

  • My Story

I’ve always found inspiration when writing in my heritage, culture, and my experiences as a second gen immigrant. My parents have always told me stories about spending their youthful years at a refugee camp and their experiences as boat people. To me, it’s always so foreign to hear about a life that is so far away from, but something is always in proximity. In a way, I believe writing about these things helps me understand and bring me closer to my parents and myself as a person as well.
